Frustrated with the multiple steps it would take me to make a poor gasket using the actual part, I made a template to trace round and then cut out for a far improved gasket for a 1985 XL350R Oil Filter Cover.
There are gripping points to help keep the template still to cut or draw around. I made slits in them to trace the full pattern.
I found drawing then cutting easier.
